Registering Your Business
Get all of the legal aspects out of the way early. That way, you don't have to worry about someone taking your big idea, screwing you over in a partnership or suing you for something you never saw coming. A quick checklist of things to shore up might include:
Business structure (LLC, corporation or a partnership, to name a few.)
Business name
Federal tax ID
State tax ID
License
Necessary bank account
While some things you can do on your own, it's best to consult with a lawyer when starting out, so you can make sure you've covered everything that you need.
Business Name
This can be the easiest part of starting a business or it can be the most difficult. If you are struggling to find the name for your business, you can use these name generators!
When you find a name, you like for your business, you will need to check to see if the name is available by either:
Visiting the state's Secretary of State which approves business entity filings in person or
Find out online at Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions!
If the name is available for use, you can register it with the state.
When you file the business name, you can also have a different name that you will be "Doing Business As" (DBA). This is not your legal business name.
Example: You file your legal business name as "Umbrella Empire" and your (DBA) name is Yellow Umbrella. Your legal business name is essentially the Parent company that can house other businesses under it.
