A new seed accelerator program for central city Milwaukee startups will launch this summer through state funds, according to a Monday announcement.
“Revolution Labs” will support five central city Milwaukee entrepreneurs through business model training, mentorship and a $10,000 grant after completing the program. The pilot program, running June 1 through Aug. 31, is being supported byWisconsin Economic Development Corp., Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority and the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families through Gov. Scott Walker’s “Transform Milwaukee” initiative.
WEDC and WHEDA are each providing $50,000 to launch the program.
“Revolution Labs addresses the significant need to develop successful startups in the community in order to reduce unemployment and create an entrepreneurial culture,” Walker said.
Revolution Labs will be managed by VETransfer, a Milwaukee nonprofit that runs an accelerator program for military veteran entrepreneurs, which will operate the program at its Milwaukee offices.
Revolution Labs’ team also includes Justice Shorter, a Marquette University graduate with a specialization in entrepreneurship and president of her own startup that offers consulting services for nonprofits and businesses.
Program organizers, with the help of local minority chambers of commerce, are recruiting applicants.
“We believe the best method for changing the economic situation in the inner city of Milwaukee is to increase the number of high-quality startups,” Shorter said. “A recent study of the Goldwater Institute found that for every 1 percentage point increase in the rate of entrepreneurship in a state, there is a 2 percent drop in that state’s poverty rate.”
Revolution Labs’ curriculum will draw from the lean startup methodology developed by entrepreneur Steve Blank.
Founders will pitch to potential investors, including during a “Demo Day” event near the conclusion of the program.
